Su­preme Court that had struck down popular attempts to regulate busi­nesses. Roosevelt initiated his presidential challenge by attacking recent decisions of the U.S. Often forgotten in all the stump-speaking fanfare, however, is what began his campaign in the first place. Sensing the weight of that year’s struggle, Roosevelt assured his supporters that, come what may, “we stand at Armageddon, and we battle for the Lord.” By campaign’s end, the colonel had survived a gunshot to the chest and achieved one of the greatest third-party performances in American history. The endeavor would lead him to break with his native Republican Party and champion the infant “Bull Moose” Progressive Party in one of the most colorful presidential runs to date. In early 1912, Theodore Roosevelt began his legendary campaign for a third term in the White House.
